Abstract Claude William Foss was born in Geneva, Illinois in 1855. He enrolled in Augustana College in 1879, and graduated in 1883 after studying in the classics and science departments. Foss was hired to teach English and history immediately after he graduated. In 1884, he was appointed to the chair of the History and Political Science department, and in 1886 he was elected vice-president of the college. Abstract Sarah Margaret Shuey Foss, a teacher and wife of Augustana College history professor Claude William Foss, was born 14 February 1863 near Staunton, Virginia. She moved to Rock Island in January 1886. She served as president of the Augustana College and Theological Seminary Endowment Fund Society for a majority of years from 1898 through 1920, and she participated in multiple local women's clubs. Abstract Josua Lindahl was a professor of natural science and mathematics at Augustana College and Theological Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois, from 1878 to 1888. Lindahl is remembered as the first full time science teacher at Augustana College and laid the foundation for his successor, John Udden, a later professor of geology.
