Scope and Contents

The Research series (1849-2001 and undated) contains files created by Paulson on various topics in the course of his research. Topics relate to numerous areas of study, such as intellectual history and historiography. Also included are research files pertaining to the development and improvement of Augustana’s campus. In addition to Paulson's general research files related to various topics that interested him, the research series includes three subseries of materials related to subjects that figured prominently in his scholarhip. Steno notebooks include Paulson's handwritten notes on research topics such as Women's History and Religion as well as personal notes and reminders on books and quotes.

The first subseries, Sorensen Project (1936-2001 and undated), contains Paulson’s research on Augustana’s sixth president, Clarence Woodrow Sorensen, including Sorensen’s work on campus and his family life.

The second subseries, School Calendar (1968-1992 and undated), consists of research regarding the change in Augustana’s academic calendar from quarters to semesters.

The third subseries, Women’s History (1849-2000 and undated), contains Paulson’s research on women’s history, including the role of women on college campuses. Though Paulson researched many different topics, he was particularly interested in women’s history.
