Scope and Contents

The Henry S. Shurtleff Justice of the Peace ledger, 1856-1876 and undated, contains a handwritten record of all the cases over which Shurtleff presided from 1857 to 1861. These range from chattel mortgages to disputes over payment for services rendered. Inserted into the ledger were repayment orders for mortgages and records from additional cases, which have been removed from the ledger and housed in a separate folder. Also included are photocopies of five obituaries: two for Job A. Shurtleff, and one each for Henry S. Shurtleff, Charles A. Shurtleff, and Hester Ann Taylor Shurtleff (Charles's wife).

Historical Note

Henry S. Shurtleff was one of the earliest settlers of Hampton Township and Rapids City, Illinois. Born in Farmington, New Hampshire, 27 February 1816, he headed west with his father in 1835 and eventually settled in Hampton Township, where he bought 40 acres of farmland and began working in the lumber industry. He also purchased 40 acres of property on the Rock River, and ultimately settled in a homestead in Rapids City, where he worked in the mercantile business, served as postmaster, assessor, and a notary public, and held the office of Justice of the Peace for almost 40 years until his death, 27 May 1893.

Shurtleff married Emeline Williamson in 1840, and the couple had four children (Barzillai M. Shurtleff, Job A. Shurtleff, Delilah H. Shurtleff, and Benjamin J. Shurtleff) before her death in 1848. The next year, he married her sister, Elizabeth Williamson, and had four more children (Emeline Shurtleff, Charles H. Shurtleff, Rosalie Shurtleff, and William Shurtleff).
