Historical Note

Helen Collins was born in 1901 in the town of Wakefield, Nebraska. Her father, Henry Collins, was a prominent businessman in the area, and her mother, Sophia Collins, was the daughter of the Salem Lutheran Church's founder. Helen was one of seven children her father hoped would all attend college; Helen and her sister Elsie selected Augustana. While at Augustana, Helen was a member of Sigma Pi Delta (the Speeds) and the women's basketball team. Although Helen actually graduated (with honors) from the University of Nebraska, she still considered Augustana College her alma mater and frequently attended Sigma Pi Delta reunions.
