Augustana Business College and School of Phonography records

The Augustana Business College was established in 1888 in order to instruct students in the particulars of starting and running a business. Students took courses in typing, shorthand, finances, business law, business writing, mathematics, and business correspondence, among others. The college was eventually renamed the Commercial Department. The School of Phonography and Typewriting was established to train students to be stenographers and secretaries. They took many of the same courses as Augustana Business College students. The schools were combined in 1895. Materials in this collection include notes on the collection; booklets, pamphlets, invitations, and letters about Correspondence Instruction, the School of Phonography, the Commerce Department, and Augustana Business College; booklets about the Gustus School of Business in Moline, Illinois; copies of The Rambler (a business college newsletter produced in Rock Island, Illinois); school correspondence; commencement week programs; invitations and programs; report cards; advertisements for evening school; Joe Anderson’s journal of financial records; financial correspondence; blank checks; financial journals; receipts; practice money (for the Business Practice Department of the Augustana Business College); and business practice forms.
