The Carl Leland Horberg papers, 1932-1955 and undated, are arranged into one series: Subject Files.

The Subject Files series contains academic and business correspondence, assorted publications by Horberg and other scholars, correspondence related to Carbon 14 dating, correspondence about the Chicago Academy of Science, and materials from conferences. Of particular interest, this series consists of materials pertaining to Horberg's work with the Journal of Geology's Editorial Committee. Items include business correspondence, meeting notes, business statistics, and publications on editing and publishing. Additionally, the series consists of student advisee files and academic materials from Horberg’s engagements while employed the University of Chicago. Materials include business correspondence, meeting minutes, and agendas of the Committee on Publications in the Physical Sciences; enrollment statistics for the physical sciences division, geology course descriptions, major requirements, and outlines; and correspondence between Horberg and anthropology department faculty regarding collaboration.

Biographical / Historical

Carl Leland Horberg was a former geology professor at Augustana College. Horberg was born in Cambridge, Illinois, in 1910. He attended Augustana College from 1928 until 1932, where he became the first graduate of the newly formed department of geology. He continued his education, receiving a doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1938. Horberg completed many studies across the Midwest and Western United States, including studies on the Mississippi Valley area, areas of Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming, and up into Alberta, Canada. He returned to teach at Augustana College from 1935 until 1937. Horberg later taught at the University of Illinois from 1938 until 1941, and the University of Chicago from 1946 until 1955. In 1942, Horberg joined the Illinois Geological Survey as an Assistant Geologist. He worked on a team seeking to develop additional supplies of groundwater for defense industries located in Illinois. He later became an Associate Geologist on the staff, and remained a consultant after taking a position at the University of Chicago. In 1953, Horberg became the editor of the Journal of Geology. He also participated in several other organizations, including The Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, and the National Association of Geology Teachers. After several periods of illness beginning in 1953, Horberg died of cancer in 1955.

Abstract

Carl Leland Horberg was a former geology professor at Augustana College. Horberg was born in Cambridge, Illinois, in 1910. He continued his education, receiving a doctorate from the University of Chicago, and also completed many important studies on the Mississippi Valley area. He returned to teach at Augustana College from 1935 until 1937, and later taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago. Horberg died of cancer in 1955. His collection includes correspondence, papers on geological subjects, copies of articles, research notes, files on students, and papers from various universities.
