Identifier: MSS 316

Scope and Contents

The Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities records consists of four series: Education, Yom Hashoa Committee, Yom Hashoa Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Video Recordings.

The Education series (1956-1987 and undated) includes literature, informational pamphlets, newspaper and magazine articles, and guides for teachers about how to teach the Holocaust in the classroom. There is a significant focus on films as a medium of Holocaust education and awareness, especially regarding the 1978 film "Holocaust." Also included are materials related to the Interfaith Sensitivity Council on the Holocaust, the American Association for Jewish Education, and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. Some of the contents of these folders may be duplicated elsewhere in this series.

The Yom Hashoa Committee series (1980-2001 and undated) contains member lists, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, public relations material, and other administrative documents relating to the Yom Hashoa Committee.

The Yom Hashoa Holocaust Remembrance Day series (1982-2001 and undated) includes programs, newspaper clippings, announcements, and correspondence relating to each year’s Remembrance Day. Also included are framed and unframed certificates from Quad City mayors proclaiming Remembrance Day dates, 1993-1995. The folders in this series are arranged chronologically by year.

The Video Recordings series (1983-1994 and undated) contains mostly VHS copies and one DVD copy of interviews with Holocaust survivors from the Quad Cities area, including Esther Katz and Esther Avruch of Rock Island. Also included are films produced using this footage, such as Memorial, which features survivors' recollections of concentration camps in Warsaw, Poland, and Auschwitz, Germany, and Genocide.
