Historical Note
The Augustana College Art Department sponsored many on-campus and off-campus events to involve students of all majors as well as the surrounding Quad Cities community in the study and appreciation of art. For example, in addition to the many art exhibitions represented in this collection, the Art Department was involved with at least two community programs called Arting at Augie and Kaleidoscope. The latter is an art enrichment program for young children sponsored by both the Augustana College Art Department and the Quad City Arts Council. Also featured in the collection is the 1968 Japan Art Festival, "I See Japan," a month long festival in which Japanese artists conducted workshops on the Augustana campus. Some of the visitors to campus included members of the Japanese Diet, potters, sculptors, artists, koto and shamisen players, theologians, and mimes. The event coincided with a larger festival hosted by the John Deere Administrative Center that displayed over 100 pieces of art.
