Fryxell, who began teaching at Augustana from 1923 to 1973 and was instrumental in establishing geology as an independent department in 1929. Abstract
James Murray Eaton was an early settler and famer in the Mississippi River Valley. Eaton was born in Willett, New York on October 31, 1835. His family traveled by covered wagon to Garden Plains, Illinois in 1836, where they lived in a log cabin. Eaton and his father were farmers, and were perhaps the first to build a frame house west of Chicago. Eaton married Emily Green, a schoolteacher originally from Lowell, Massachusetts. John Alfred Eckström was born in Sweden in 1862, and immigrated to the United States in 1881. He attended Augustana College from 1882 until he graduated in 1889. That same year, Eckström was ordained as a Lutheran minister in the Augustana Synod. He served as a pastor for several congregations in the Midwest, and then retired in 1940. Eckström died in 1948. The E.P. Reynolds, Saulpaugh, & Co. account ledger contains purchases and credits for the years 1859-1860, as well as balance sheets. The company was founded in Rock Island in 1858 for the purpose of taking contracts and furnishing men to harvest lumber for railroad ties from pine forests in the northern United States. The names of several prominent Rock Island citizens appear in the ledger.
