Historical Note

The Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society was founded at Washington and Lee University in 1914. The Augustana College chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, referred to as the Augustana “circle” by the society, was established in 1962 by eleven students and six faculty members. Augustana’s circle of Omicron Delta Kappa was built from the foundation of Verdandi, the local honor society for men founded at Augustana College in 1960. From its founding, Verdandi was patterned off of Omicron Delta Kappa with the intention of one day establishing a local chapter of the national society. Augustana’s circle of Omicron Delta Kappa remains active on campus today, with no more than three percent of students elected to this highly selective group. Potential new members are “tapped” for membership at the end of their junior year based on achievements in scholarship, in addition to achievements in athletics, community service, social activities, or performing arts.
