Abstract
The Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad, commonly known as the "Rock Island Line," was chartered in 1847. When the charter was amended to reflect the line's expansion to Chicago in 1851, the railroad was named the Chicago and Rock Island. In 1961, churches in Rock Island County, Illinois, and Scott County, Iowa, merged to form the "Council of Churches of Scott and Rock Island Counties." The Class of 1916 was an Augustana College club founded in 1912 by members of the freshman class of the Collegiate Department. Helen Collins was born in 1901 in the town of Wakefield, Nebraska. Her father, Henry Collins, was a prominent businessman in the area; her mother, Sophia Collins, was the daughter of the Salem Lutheran Church's founder. Helen was one of seven children her father hoped would all attend college; Helen and her sister Elsie selected Augustana. Theodore Celms, Augustana College professor from 1949 to 1963 and 1967 to 1973, was one of the many scholars evacuated from Eastern Europe during World War II. The Robert Cooper collection on Theodore Celms consists of photocopies of several short biographical articles on Dr. Celms, including announcements about his death, and photocopies of Cooper's class notes from Celms's 1961 Philosophy of Culture course.
