The Runic Honor Society of Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, was founded in the spring of 1933 by a group of seven male students. The purpose of the society was to recognize academic achievement and service among Augustana students. Originally, membership was open only to men, but women were included in the society beginning in 1937. Abstract
George Herbert Ryden was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1884. He graduated from Augustana College in 1909. Ryden went on to earn his master’s and doctorate, and taught at Bethany and Dartmouth Colleges. During the Russian revolutions, he was appointed as the commissioner of the American Red Cross efforts in southern Russia, and helped some of the royal family to safety. Cora Santee was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 16 August 1916. From 1934 to 1937 she attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where she sang in the Augustana Choir which was directed by Henry Veld from 1929 to1966. This collection consists of a scrapbook of Cora Santee’s experience in the Augustana College Choir, which includes programs, news clippings, cards, photographs, posters, and song lyrics.
