Richard "Doc" Anderson was born April 22, 1930, in Moline, Illinois. He graduated from Augustana College in 1952 after studying under Frytiof Fryxell and R.W. Edmund. He received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1955 under the guidance of Leland Horberg, another Augustana alumnus. Earth Interpreters: F. M. Fryxell, Geology, and Augustana was published by the Augustana College Library in 1992 as a tribute to Fritiof M. Fryxell, who began teaching at Augustana from 1923 to 1973 and was instrumental in establishing geology as an independent department in 1929. Carl Leland Horberg was a former geology professor at Augustana College. Horberg was born in Cambridge, Illinois, in 1910. He was the first student to graduate from the newly formed department of geology in 1932.
