Scope and Contents
The Personal series, 1966-2016 and undated, contains papers produced by McKinley outside of his theatrical career and his education. The Burkholder Jr. High School subseries contains materials pertaining to McKinley’s year as a music teacher at Burkholder Jr. High School near Las Vegas, Nevada, including his work as director of the school’s show choir. The Correspondence subseries contains a collection of McKinley’s correspondence. Materials primarily relate to his theatrical career, such as articles and playbills, which he sent to his mother, Virginia McKinley, between 1969 and 1991. The Playbills subseries contains playbills from productions McKinley attended. The Miscellaneous subseries includes church bulletins from Avon, Illinois; a certificate naming McKinley an “Outstanding Young Man of America;” and articles about McKinley not relating to his professional career, including one about a return, as an alumnus, to Augustana College. The subseries concludes with two handwritten binders containing thousands of quips and stories as well as poetry, limericks, epitaphs, and minstrel gags. Also included in this series are materials related to the opening of the Kim and Donna Brunner Theater Center at Augustana College in 2016 and papers related to McKinley's participation in a Relay for Life fundraiser hosted by Angels in Action in December 2013.
