The Laborers, Class Song of 1924
Scope and Contents
Sheet Music, 1864-1985 and undated, contains various pieces of locally significant sheet music. Included in this series is a folder of unidentified and undated music manuscripts that may have been produced by Augustana music students or local composers. The minstrel songs, 1864-1916 and undated, were designed to be sung by African-American minstrels (or white minstrels in blackface), and much of this printed music includes images of racial stock characters and racist terminology. The school songs, 1889-1927, in this series consist of local high school and local college theme songs. Also included is other sheet music, 1869-1985 and undated, collected because of its local significance. This music is arranged alphabetically by composer’s last name. Prominent composers in this series are J. Victor Bergquist, Roy L. Burch, Frederic H. Cesander, Regina Holmen Fryxell, F.J. Johnson, Frank Alexander Joseph, Reinhold Lagerstrom, Emil Larson, J.J. Miller, Ernest Otto, Eric Philip Severin, Gunnar Wennerberg, and Lewis Edgar West.
