Correspondence, 1962-1975
Scope and Contents
The Clarence Woodrow Sorensen papers, 1947-1979 and undated, is arranged into three series levels. Correspondence, 1962-1975, includes letters received and sent by Sorensen during his presidency. Subject Files, 1947-1979 and undated, contains materials related to the various activities, organizations, and interests that Sorensen engaged with inside and outside of the college. Of particular interest are the materials related to the Black Power Symposium, a public event organized by the Afro-American Society (now named the Black Student Union) at Augustana College’s Centennial Hall in February 1969. Sorensen’s papers include both positive and negative responses from Augustana affiliates and community members, as well as his communication and notes about the symposium. Speakers at the symposium included Dick Gregory, Andrew Hatcher, Roy Innis, Jesse Jackson, Roy Morrison, and C.S. Smith. This series also comprises personal papers, such as biographical accounts, photographs, newspaper articles, personal correspondence, addresses and speeches, publications, and synod papers. 1984 Addendum (unprocessed), 1955-1983 and undated, consists of mostly administrative materials, such as the Board of Directors minutes, development and campus planning documents, and general presidential materials.
