Historical Note
Le Cercle Francais was initiated on 7 November 1921 with the goal of promoting the use and understanding of the French language outside the classroom. The group met twice monthly and conducted programming entirely in French, including plays, songs, stories, and study of conversational French. The group's members published a bi-monthly paper in French, played French games, and referred to each other as "parley-vous-ers." The group experienced several long periods of inactivity, beginning by ostensibly dissolving after its first year. Students interested in French joined the Quad City French Club, which had an Augustana campus component, in the 1940s and 1950s. A new Augustana College French Club was organized in 1966, unofficially calling itself Le Cercle Francais at least in its first year. This iteration of the club has continued to meet regularly, and still exists as of 2016.
