Scope and Contents
The Emil Afred Swanson papers, 1908-1945 and undated, contains an inspection card issued upon Swanson's departure from Liverpool en route to the United States in 1908, a 1912 emigrant contract, a passenger list and other ephemera from a trip to Sweden in 1937, and a letter of endorsement for Mayor of Moline, as well as two personal letters in Swedish and two photographs.

Historical Note
Emil Swanson was born in 1891 in Sweden and came to Moline, Illinois in 1908. He received his B.A. from Augustana College in 1923. During his time in Moline, he worked at several vocations including store owner, school teacher, school principal, factory safety inspector, and apartment owner. Swanson was also was active in Moline's municipal government where he served for eight years as an alderman and four years as a member of the county board and was also Democratic candidate for Mayor in 1945. He founded the Scandinavian-American Roosevelt Club of Moline.
