Scope and Contents

The Emily Envall Dahlberg papers, 1889-1895 and undated, largely span less than four years of her life, beginning with her year as a student of music at Augustana College in 1889. The papers, in both English and Swedish, contain information about her studies, social life, and relationship with Johan G. Dahlberg. The papers are arranged in five series: Notebooks, Letters, Account Book, and Miscellaneous Writings and Publications, and Photographs.

The Notebooks series contains two notebooks from her year at Augustana, detailing social and academic life. The Letters series contains four letters written by Emily, in a mix of English and Swedish, and two letters written by Johan G. Dahlberg, written in Swedish. The Account of Playing and Music Lessons series contains the records of payment received by Emily for music lessons and church and funeral services at which she played the organ in Galesburg in 1890. The Miscellaneous Writings and Publications series contains a religious tract, three published photographs, handwritten materials signed by E.A. Edlen, and a catalog of Augustana College and Theological Seminary for 1890-1891. The Photographs series contains photographs of the family gravestones in Galesburg.

Historical Note

Emily Caroline Envall was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on 25 November 1869, the oldest child of John and Caroline Peterson Envall, recent immigrants from Sweden. Her father became a prosperous Galesburg businessman. Emily Envall was baptized on 1 January 1870, and confirmed on 1 June 1884, at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. She received less than seven years of formal education in the Galesburg public schools. On 10 January 1889 she entered the Augustana Conservatory of Music at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. She studied music and other subjects, and was active in the Phrenokosmian Society. She attended Augustana for only one year, leaving at the end of the semester in December 1889. While a student at Augustana, Envall met seminarian Johan (John) G. Dahlberg, whom she married on 25 November 1891. He was a pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona, Illinois. Emily Envall Dahlberg died in childbirth on 8 November 1892, survived by her husband and a son, Carl Johan Emil Dahlberg. Her son, Emil Dalberg, died in Galesburg in 1961.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Dahlberg's notebooks and a single letter were purchased at a flea market in Davenport, Iowa in 1988 and 1989.
