Scope and Contents

The Allen Johnson papers, circa 1914-1993 and undated, is arranged into five series: Programs (1923-1936 and undated), Augustana Book Concern (1927-1949); Photographs (1928 and undated); Books and Publications (circa 1914-1993 and undated); Artifacts (1926-1940 and undated).

The Programs series primarily includes programs from Augustana College events, including Homecoming, Commencement, and the Lyceum. There are also University of Iowa football programs, Chicago Cubs and White Sox box score books, and a smattering of programs to other events.

The Augustana Book Concern series includes preservation photocopies of a special section of the Rock Island Argus newspaper devoted to the fiftieth anniversary of the Book Concern. The section was 11 pages long and includes many articles and photographs of the publishing house. The series also includes a small number of items produced by the Augustana Book Concern, including newsletters.

The Photographs series includes mostly unidentified portraits and snapshots of individuals and groups. The series also includes one large panoramic group image of the employees of the Augustana Book Concern.

The Books and Publications series contains an Augustana yearbook, one issue of the Augustana Observer, and a pamphlet about Swedish universities in America.

The Artifacts series consists of Augustana College memorabilia, including two college decals, three fobs, one wool blanket with a felt Viking patch, one letter jacket, seven wooden crests with the Augustana seal, and a brass calendar stand with the Augustana seal.

Historical Note

Allen H. Johnson was born 27 June 1906 in Elburn, Illinois, the son of Olof and Anna Johnson. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Morrison, Illinois where he received his early education. He graduated from Augustana College in 1929. While at Augustana, Johnson worked part time at the Augustana Book Concern and upon graduation, he became a full time cashier and payroll manager. He continued to work at the Book Concern for over 35 years. In 1940, Johnson married Marie Johansen. Johnson remained a long time resident of Rock Island where he was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He died on 14 March 2003.
