Historical Note

D. Hawes and Son was a retail establishment located at the corner of Washington and Illinois Streets in downtown Rock Island, Illinois. The store may originally have been opened by W.B. Sargent in 1860, but sometime in the 1860s ownership was ultimately taken over by David Hawes and his son, Major Charles W. Hawes, to whom its name refers.

David Hawes was a pioneer settler of the town of Rock Island. His son, Major Charles Hawes, born in 1841, earned his title during the Civil War as a member of the 92nd United States Cavalry. Upon returning from the war, Charles held partial ownership interest in his father's store before becoming Rock Island's Chief of Police, then Postmaster. In 1885, two years after Modern Woodmen of America was organized, Charles joined a Modern Woodmen of America camp. In 1890, he was elected Head Clerk. While in this position, Charles was greatly influential in facilitating the relocation of the organization's headquarters to from Fulton, Illinois, to Rock Island.
