Historical Note

Turner societies and clubs appeared in areas of heavy German immigration in the United States throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These groups were modeled after Turnvereine (gymnastics unions) founded in Germany by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in the early 19th century, and they served as both physical education outlets and activist hubs for many German Americans.

The Moline Turner Society was composed of both male and female members, and the group participated in competitive gymnastics on both the local and national stage. Its members notably served as delegates to the 33rd National Turnfest held in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1926.
