Historical Note

Latinx Unidos (LU) is a student organization at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. The group attempts to both celebrate and educate the campus about Latinx and Hispanic culture and issues. LU is also actively involved in the local Quad Cities community. Members volunteer at local elementary schools and Boys' and Girls' Clubs, in addition to giving presentations to junior high and high school students about the importance of a college education. Membership is open to all students.

LU was founded during the 1991-1992 school year at a meeting called by then-sophomore Christina Marie Torres. Originally called Latinos Unidos, or "unified Latins," the group was founded in order to imporove Hispanic and Latinx representation on campus. LU's early activities included organizing cultural events, providing translators for native Spanish speakers who visited campus, and conducting outreach events at area schools to promote higher education among the Hispanic community. In 1994, LU received its own culture house, Casa Latina, to serve as a base of operations and event space. Originally located at 3443 7th Avenue, the house included a 17 by 8-foot mural by local artist Rose Granado-Mohr. The house relocated to 9 1/2 Avenue in 2007 and continues to operate as of 2017.
