Scope and Contents
The Siboney Bay Camp Number 8, Rock Island, Illinois, records consist of four volumes and their enclosures. These volumes are organized into two series. The Meeting minutes series, 1902-1913 and 1930-1938, includes minutes of the group’s monthly meetings, resolutions, information related to the election of officers. These records are apparently incomplete, with a gap in documentation from 1914 to 1929. The Account books series, 1902-1937, contains listings for individual members and their financial accounts, including dues and reimbursements owed, and expenditures and fundraisers for the chapter itself. Also included is a folder of enclosures from the volumes, including copies of resolutions, pension information, and chapter members’ obituaries.

Historical Note
Located on the Cuban coast, Siboney Bay Camp number 8 was where United States forces came ashore during the Spanish American War in 1898. The Rock Island veterans group by the same name kept records of local former service men, their dates of death, and information pertaining to their discharge from the Army. A wage of $1.30 -$2.50 was awarded to each soldier upon his honorable discharge from the service. The group also kept abreast of national communications and developments regarding Spanish American War veterans and their pensions. Additionally, the group regularly attended and held social events in conjunction with other area clubs and societies, including women’s auxiliary groups and the Daughters of the American Revolution. In its earliest days, the Siboney Bay Camp Number 8 veterans group was either named or affiliated with Siboney Bay Camp Number 274.
