Historical Note
Augustana College’s WVIK is the campus public radio station. Bill Lindholm, a junior in the pre-seminary program, started the station in 1952 by stringing 2,500 feet of wire through the college’s heating tunnels. After overcoming several problems, especially the lack of a record library, the station was broadcast for the first time on November 13, 1952. Originally, the station was only available in Andreen and the Women’s Building. The station was initially called WAUG, and broadcasted on an AM band. The name had to be changed, however, during the summer of 1960 because another radio station in Georgia already used that name. When the station changed it's name, it also added an FM radio station, while keeping the student run AM broadcasting, in hopes of widening their audience. The new WVIK-FM broadcast for the first time on February 25, 1965.
Rock Island Lines was created in 1995 by Don Wooten and is hosted as well as curated by retired Augustana College English professor, Roald Tweet. Rock Island Lines consists of two-and-a-half to three-minute long segments where Tweet reads anecdotes and other historical information about the Quad Cities area to the listening audience.
