Abstract

Don Sundquist was born in Moline, Illinois on March 15, 1936. He attended Moline High School, and graduated in 1953. Sundquist also attended Augustana College, where he earned his BA in 1957. At Augustana, he met his future wife, Martha Swanson. Sundquist served in the United States Navy for several years. He was also the national chairman for the Young Republican National Federation. Sundquist began his political career by running several campaigns for the Republican Party. He then ran for a congressional seat in Tennessee. He won the seat, and served six terms in the district (1983-1995). In 1995, Sundquist was elected as the 47th governor of Tennessee. He was reelected in the next race, and served in the position until 2003. Sundquist and his wife have three children: Tania Williamson, Andrea Sundquist, and Donald Sundquist Jr. Materials in this collection include political memorabilia such as stickers, bumper stickers, pamphlets, fans, stock photographs, invitations, programs, booklets, plastic shopping bags, a VHS tape, a mug, a flag, nail files, a pin, and a keychain.
