Abstract

Carl Gamble was an amateur astronomer from Moline, Illinois. Gamble built his own mini-observatory near his home. Upon his death, he willed his telescope and other observatory equipment to Augustana College, which named the Carl Gamble Observatory in the John Deere Planetarium in his honor. He also worked for Deere & Co. for many years. In 1951, Gamble was presented an honorary doctorate of humanities from Augustana College. His collection includes the observatory visitors’ book, a photograph, a certificate, a speech, and several articles.
