Scope and Contents

The Augustana College charter and constitutions includes an 1869 charter and several versions of the school's constitution. While most of the contitutions are printed, the 1882 selections consist of bound volumes containing passages from older consitutions pasted in with handwritten notes and alterations. The charter, 1880 contitution, 1881 contitution, and 1886 constitution are written in Swedish. The other constitutions are written in English, with the exception of the 1889 constitution which has the official English version as well as a Swedish translation.

Historical Note

Augustana College was founded by Swedish Lutherans in Chicago as Augustana Theological Seminary in 1860. As the school established itself, the official language shifted from Swedish to English and the school moved to Paxton, Illinois before it settled in Rock Island, Illinois in 1875. The school was granted a new charter and its name changed to Augustana College and Theological Seminary to accommodate this move. In 1947, the college and seminary formally separated, and the college's was permanently named Augustana College.
