Such organizations include American Geological Institute (AGI), Geological Society of America (GSA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), Earth Science Teachers Association (ESTA), Earth Science Teacher Placement Service (ESTP), International Geological Congress (IGC), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and others.

The Summer Field Training Program (1940-2010 and undated) series contains reports from program meetings belonging to member Tom Hendrix and lists of applicants and participants.

The Journal of Geoscience Education (1951-2017) series contains a nearly complete set of every edition of the magazine published by NAGT [missing vol. 44 1996, vol. 45 1997, and all the volumes from 2000]. The original bi-annual publications and the later quarterly editions are included as well as any special editions. Until 1995 the publication was known as the Journal of Geological Education.

The E-Newsletter (2009-2010) series contains NAGT’s electronically published newsletter.

The Printed Matter (1946-2008) series consists of articles and pamphlets that are geologically related but only loosely connected to NAGT itself, including various science and engineering bulletins. Print-outs of the online NAGT News are also included.

The Miscellaneous (1961-2007 and undated) series consists of audiocassettes of undated meeting minutes, photographs and items from a display about NAGT and other miscellaneous papers.

Historical Note

The National Organization of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) is an organization dedicated to the teaching of earth sciences and making information accessible to the general public. The national organization was founded under the name Association of Geology Teachers in 1938 and was later divided into thirteen regional sections: Eastern (established 1950), Central (1951), New England (1952), East Central (1952), Far Western and Hawaii (1954), Southeastern (1955), Pacific Northwest and Alaska (1957), Southwestern (1959), Texas (1959), Kansas-Oklahoma (1960), North Central (1962), Florida (1973), and South Central (1980). NAGT publishes the Journal of Geoscience Education, which appears five times annually and features prominent articles concerning both geoscience and education. The organization also sponsors the Neil Miner Award for Excellence in Geoscience Education and the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award, both of which are awarded annually. The group is also very involved with field research and other experience-based activities in both colleges and secondary schools. NAGT is affiliated with other geoscrience organizations such as the American Geological Institute (AGI) and the Geological Society of America (GSA).

NAGT was initially called "Association of Geology Teachers," and became "national" in 1958. It was also formerly referred to as "The Association of College Geology Teachers" and "The National Association of Geology Teachers" before recognizing the 1996 name change from "Geology" to "Geoscience." In the same vein, "The Journal of Geoscience Education" was also formerly called "The Journal of Geological Education."
