Historical Note
The Mathematics Club began at Augustana College in 1952 with twelve student members and four faculty members (Rockety-I 1952, page 163). The club’s purpose was “the pursuit of both cultural and scientific mathematical interests and the furthering of mathematical appreciation in college and community.” The club held meetings on the second Monday of every month. Meetings included of a “lecture type program supplementary to classroom material” (1952 Constitution). In March 1979, the Mathematics Club chartered the Illinois Eta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics national honor society. The club has also sponsored the annual Math Bowl, participated in intramural athletics, and other social gatherings.
