"Diary of a Confederate Prisoner, 1864, at Rock Island, Illinois", 1939-1940
Scope and Contents
This volume includes the 1864 diary of a Confederate soldier, Lafayette Rogan, who was held at the Confederate prison at Rock Island Arsenal during the Civil War. The diary describes life at the prison during the year 1864. According to Hauberg, the diary is "the best item, bearing on conditions, life, etc. at the prison, that has come to my attention." The volume was copied from Rogan's granddaughter, Mary Rogan Huntington Hooker's copy of the diary in 1939, and it includes an introduction describing the volume's provenance, a description of the Confederate prison at the Rock Island Arsenal, and notes on the prison (including photographs), all written by John Hauberg.
