Historical Note
Flavius J. Sten was born in St. Helens, Oregon. He attended the Augustana Academy for high school until 1911, when he entered Augustana College. As a freshman, he was a forward on the varsity basketball team, a position he would hold until he graduated. He also coached the girls’ basketball team. As a sophomore, Sten joined the Gladstone Debating Team, the Phrenokosmian Society, and the Tennis Club. During his junior year, Sten joined the Rooters Club, the track squad, and the baseball team, and he was also elected president of the Augustana Athletic Association. He acted as the treasurer of the Augustana Military Band and played clarinet. During his senior year, Sten acted as the Manager of Athletics and the captain of the varsity basketball team. He was also the "Organizations" editor for the Rockety-I, the school yearbook.
Sten graduated from Augustana College in 1914 as class salutatorian. After graduation, he worked for one year as a science teacher at St. Helens High School in Oregon before moving to Great Falls, Montana. Sten married Clara Johnson in 1917 and became the general manager of the Montana Hardware Company. Sten was inducted into the Tribe of Vikings Hall of Fame in 1977.
