Scope and Contents

The Hulda Fryxell papers, 1886-1981 and undated, is arranged into two series.

Subject Files, 1913-1981 and undated, contains a variety of concert programs, newspaper clippings, and one folder consisting of poems and songs from Maria Louisa Peterson. A majority of the concert programs come from Tri-City Symphony Orchestra concerts, with other programs from local musical interest groups and ensembles.

Photographs and Paintings, 1886-1918 and undated, consists of family and Augustana-related photographs. Included in this series is also one painting by V. Wellintz of Lincoln Park in Rock Island.

Biographical / Historical

Hulda Peterson Fryxell was born in Rock Island, Illinois in 1897. She graduated from Augustana College’s School of Music and later became a violin instructor at the college in 1924. Hulda was a charter member of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, formerly the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra, and the Clinton Symphony in Clinton, Iowa. She married Hjalmar Fryxell of Moline, Illinois in 1924. Hulda served on the board of directors for the Rock Island Fine Arts Club, was a member of the Friends of Chamber Music, and served on a committee for the Tri-City Symphony’s Youth Orchestra.

Abstract

Hulda Fryxell was a former teacher at Augustana College. She taught in several area schools, including the Augustana Conservatory. She then became a violin teacher at the college in 1924. Her papers include concert programs, news clippings, photographs, portraits, and a painting.
