Abstract

The Augustana College Office of Cultural Events was responsible for planning and scheduling events on campus, especially those related to music and theater. While mostly organizing events for students and faculty, the Office of Cultural Events also helped organize events for visiting performers. Materials in this collection include newsletters, posters, flyers, news clippings, and programs.

Paul G. Finnman papers

Abstract Paul G. Finnman was a former student of Augustana College. Finnman was originally from Nebraska, and graduated as a member of the class of 1939. He composed the words and music for "Alma Mater," a song for Augustana College in 1937, as well as several other pieces for fraternities. Finnman often accompanied students in recitals and performances. Hulda Fryxell was a former teacher at Augustana College. She taught in several area schools, including the Augustana Conservatory. She then became a violin teacher at the college in 1924. Her papers include concert programs, news clippings, photographs, portraits, and a painting.

Abstract Louise Nathanson (née Meiszner) was a world-renowned pianist active in the mid-twentieth century. The daughter of Hungarian immigrants, Nathanson hailed from St. Louis, Missouri, and performed as a soloist for many notable ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Phil Spitalny All Girl Orchestra. Abstract The Quad City Symphony Orchestra held its first concert on May 19, 1916, at the Burtis Opera House in Davenport, Iowa. At the time, the orchestra was known as the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra, and had a conductor, sixty musicians, and two soloists. The group changed its name to the Quad City Symphony in 1985.
