Augustana College Reading/Writing Center records
Abstract
Augustana’s Reading/Writing Center provides tutoring services for students on reading comprehension, academic writing, English language learning, and graduate entrance exam preparation. The Center was founded as the Writing Laboratory in 1975, operating out of the basement of East Hall. Its original director was English faculty member Charlene Hawks. By 1977, the Writing Laboratory had changed its name to the Reading/Writing Center, and in 1978, the Center relocated to room 128 in Old Main, where it remained until 2008, when it moved to the Thomas Tredway Library. The Center continues to operate as part of the Gerber Center for Student life. The Reading/Writing Center records, 1977-2007, comprises papers and records collected by longtime employee Virginia Johnson. Records include tutor lists, training documents, budgets, workshop packets, worksheets and forms, and other materials used or created by RWC staff. Most folders contain a sticky note written by Johnson and attached to the inside cover of the folder, explaining that folder’s contents and the history behind the materials enclosed within it.
