 Collection
Identifier: MSS 299

Scope and Contents

The Moretz and Stahl family collection of Augustana College materials, 1924-2014 and undated, contains the personal possessions of Ethel Paulson Moretz, Helen Moretz Stahl, Dick Stahl, and John Moretz (son of Ethel Paulson Moretz and brother of Helen Moretz Stahl). Covering a 67 year span, the materials include documents, photographs, postcards, and memorabilia from family members' time at Augustana College. Many materials originally received duplicated existing holdings in Augustana College Special Collections, and these have been separated from the collection. The collection has been arranged chronologically and into two series: the Ethel Paulson Moretz Items and the Helen Moretz Stahl and Richard Stahl Items.

The Ethel Paulson Moretz Items (1924-1979 and undatd) have been arranged into three subseries: Augustana Documents, Photographs, and Memorabilia. The Augustana Documents subseries includes documents collected before and during Ethel Paulson Moretz’s enrollment at Augustana College. This subseries includes a list of materials that were duplicative and returned to Helen Moretz Stahl, or items from this collection that were stored elsewhere in Special Collections. The Photographs subseries contains photographs taken of and by Ethel on the Augustana College campus. The final subseries, Memorabilia, consists of Ethel’s sorority pin, class ring, and an Augustana Founder’s Association paperweight.

The Helen Moretz Stahl and Richard Stahl Items (1958-2014), is also arranged into three subseries: Augustana Documents, Photographs, and Memorabilia. Augustana Documents contains the couple’s collected papers in association with Augustana College during and after their enrollment, including a list of materials that were duplicative and returned to Helen Moretz Stahl, or items from this collection that were stored elsewhere in Special Collections. Photographs include photographs of the Tredway Library Dedication ceremony in 1990 and Wallenberg Hall’s renovations in 1991, as well as a handful of snapshots from Helen's 40th and 50th class reunions. Photographs taken by Dick Stahl documenting the 2012-2013 construction and renovation of Augustana's campus were added in July 2014. The Memorabilia subseries includes a freshman beanie and Dick Stahl’s Augustana College t-shirt.
