Historical Note

The Augustana Symphony Orchestra, also known as the Augustana College Orchestra in its early years, is a student musical organization that features select soloists from the college. It has been an active organization in the college, even from its early years.

According to Conrad Bergendoff's book Augustana: A Profession of Faith, an organized orchestra was first formed on the Augustana campus in 1893. The early orchestras were much smaller than today's; the orchestra mentioned in the 1899-1900 College catalogue had fifteen members. The orchestra grew in size until it reached its current membership of 75 to 85 musicians. The orchestra accompanies the Handel Oratorio Society each year in its concert series.
