Abstract
Augustana College first established a summer school program in 1916. The administration offered students the choice of three classes on the Rock Island campus. The program gradually expanded to a greater number of classes, as well as summer school classes in locations such as the Rocky Mountains, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. Materials in this collection include brochures and summer foreign term pamphlets.

The Augustana College Swedish Institute was an organization formed in 1940 in order to encourage the study of Swedish culture and the preservation of the historical heritage of the college. Augustana College offered its first courses in elocution and physical culture in 1897-1898, which likely included some elements of acting. In 1910-1911, the Department of Elocution and Physical Culture first offered a course in “dramatic expression.” This department eventually changed into the Theater Department. The Valkyries was an honorary athletics society that was created for women at Augustana College in 1928. It was organized by the Augustana Girls’ Athletics Association. Membership was limited to 24 girls who had earned 150 points in athletic competitions and were elected into the group. The Augustana Woman's Club (later called the Women's League) was founded in 1917. Women enrolled in any Augustana College department were eligible to join. The constitution of the club was soon amended to include women faculty members and wives of the faculty.
