J.E.W. Wallin and L.E. Jones correspondence

Abstract

L. E. Jones and J.E.W. Wallin were both Augustana College alumni. L.E. Jones corresponded frequently with Wallin under the auspices of the Augustana Alumni Association board and as alumni editor of the Augustana Observer. Their correspondence largely centers Wallin’s implorations to Jones to publish a bibliography of his work and Jones’s attempts to convince Wallin to contribute to the Observer.

John C. Walsh papers

Abstract

John C. Walsh was a man interested in Black Hawk and the Black Hawk wars. In 1892, he wrote a letter to H.N. Patterson in Oquawka, Illinois, asking for information about Black Hawk. The result of his search is unknown. This collection contains an 1892 letter from Walsh, as well as several letters about Walsh between Florence Patterson and John Henry Hauberg.

"The Water Devil" manuscript

Abstract “The Water Devil: a Tale of Fact and Fiction” is a mystery about a monster terrorizing the Rock Island area. The ‘Water Devil’ attacks victims near the river, then disappears into the water. The tale follows a young man helping with the investigation of the assaults. Pages are missing from the manuscript, so the story is incomplete. The author is unknown, although the narrator states that he lived in the area during the “gay ‘90s,” and seems to set the story around 1918. This collection...

Erwin Weber papers

Abstract Erwin Weber was born on April 17, 1921, in Leichlingen, Germany. In order to decrease his family’s cost of living, he was raised in a foster home, then in an orphanage, with several of his siblings. Weber immigrated to the United States in 1936 when he was 15. Abstract Egon Weiner was born in 1906 in Vienna, Austria. He trained as an artist at the School for Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbe Schule) and the Academy of Fine Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste) in Vienna. He received an M.F.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1933. He arrived in the United States in 1938 after fleeing Nazi-occupied Austria and became a citizen in 1944. Wennerberg Chorus records

Abstract Augustana College's Wennerberg Male Chorus was formed in October 1901. Gustav Andreen, then president of Augustana College, had requested that a male chorus be organized to participate in the Gunnar Wennerberg Festival to be held the following December. The group eventually merged with the all-female Oriole Chorus in 1931 to form the Augustana College Choir, although the male members of the choir did continue to perform separately as the Wennerberg Chorus until the mid-1960s. Lewis Edgar (L.E.) West was born 13 April 1854 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Harmon E. and Mary E. West. The family settled in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1861. On 10 October 1888, L.E. West married Ella C. Clarkson of Galesburg, Illinois. The West family papers, 1885-1928 and undated, consists of correspondence (1894-1915 and undated), financial records (1913-1928), advertisements (undated), and other papers (1885-1921 and undated).

Abstract Hans Westerlund (1842-1874) was a devout Evangelical Lutheran and a Civil War soldier who served in Company C of the 43rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (also known as the “Koerner Regiment”) for the United States Army. Bernard Y. Wickstrom was a student at Augustana College from 1947 until 1950. He was an editor for the Augustana Observer, president of the Augustana chapter of the Alpha Delta Journalistic Fraternity, and a "Poobah."
