Abstract The Lars Paul Esbjörn and Esbjörn family papers primarily documents the personal and professional life of the first president of Augustana College, Lars Paul Esbjörn. Esbjörn was born in Sweden in 1808 and immigrated to America in 1849. In 1860, he became the first president of Augustana College, and remained in this position until 1863, when the college was moved to Paxton, Illinois. Abstract The Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist papers, 1840-1988 and undated, primarily documents the personal and professional life of the second president of Augustana College, Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist. Hasselquist was born in Sweden in 1816 and traveled to America in 1852. Before assuming the presidency of the college in 1863, Hasselquist was the president of the Augustana Synod, the editor of a Swedish-language newspaper, and a pastor. Iduna Society records

Abstract

The Iduna Society was founded 21 November 1902 and disbanded in the academic year 1925-1926. It was one of five Augustana College societies dedicated to the further exploration of the Swedish language through Swedish literature. The Iduna Society records, 1907-1922 and undated, contains three handwritten copies of the group's monthly publication, "Iduna," in Swedish, a bound book of meeting minutes in Swedish, and several miscellaneous documents in both English and Swedish.

Abstract

The Olof Rudbeck Society, named after a Swedish scientist and author, was active on Augustana College’s campus from 1910 until 1928. As one of several Swedish literary societies on campus, the Olof Rudbeck Society was established to further the study of Swedish language and literature. The Olof Rudbeck Society records date from 1910 to 1928. The records consist of the group’s constitution, minutes, and one Book Concern receipt.

Abstract

Also known as the Swedish Society of Belles Lettres, Svenska Vitterhetssallskapet was a literary society created in 1897. The purpose of the society was to encourage and maintain interest in Swedish literature and culture. The membership was limited to 18. This collection consists of materials in Swedish, including meeting minutes and copies of two newsletters: the Runan and the Tomten.
