Biographical / Historical
Born in Osby in the province of Skåne in southern Sweden in 1816, educated at Lund University, and ordained in the Church of Sweden in 1839, Hasselquist immigrated to the United States in 1852. Once in the United States, Hasselquist served as pastor of a church in Galesburg, editor of the Swedish-language newspaper Hemlandet, president of the Augustana Synod, and president of Augustana College (then called Augustana Seminary). Before assuming the presidency, Hasselquist was influential in moving the college from Chicago, Illinois to Paxton, Illinois in response to a railway land grant of 900 acres. Once in Paxton, Hasselquist succeeded in increasing enrollment from ten students in 1863 to 81 a decade later, and the faculty from two to four, plus two tutors. In 1875, Hasselquist oversaw the school’s second relocation to a 16-acre plot in Rock Island, Illinois.
Along with the classic curriculum of the classics, language, religion, science, and mathematics, he also introduced physical education, music, and a commercial course. He welcomed the presence of women on campus, witnessing the graduation of the first woman in 1885. Tuvfe Nilsson Hasselquist married Eva Helena Cervin in 1852. He passed away in 1891.
