The Elfriede Beyer papers, 1927-1989 and undated, contains two of Beyer's sketchbooks and personal items removed from the sketchbooks. The small sketchbook is filled with an eclectic array of her artwork. In the large sketchbook, a significant portion of the pages are either cut out or left blank. Miscellaneous items include a published Christmas story, obituary, and personal notes on biblical subjects.

Overview

Elfriede Leschewski Beyer was a German immigrant, a member of the Black Hawk Hiking Club, and an award-winning artist active in the Rock Island area in the mid-twentieth century. The Elfriede Beyer papers, 1927-1989 and undated, contains two of Beyer's sketchbooks, Beyer's obituary, and personal notes removed from the sketchbooks.

Historical Note

Elfriede Leschewski Beyer was born 1 August 1893, in Liegnitz Schlesien, Germany. She married Rev. Earl A. Beyer 14 August 1923. She worked as a banker in Germany until they moved to the United States. Her husband was a romance language professor at Augustana College from 1931 until his death in 1957. Elfriede was a member of the Black Hawk Hiking Club, and an award-winning artist.
