Historical Note
The Kappa Epsilon Nu sorority, known as the “Kens”, was first organized during Augustana College’s homecoming banquet of 1923 by a group of friends interested in promoting friendship and spirit among women. In 1925, Leota J. Norton, Ester Woodburn, Florence Tams, Eleanor Graham, Ethel Eldrige, Charlotte Schnathoist, Kay Bragg, Helen Searle, Natalie Souders, and Frances Long received a charter to make Kappa Epsilon Nu into an official organization. The Kens held their first official sorority meeting in February 1926. In 1957, the Kens opted to change their nickname to “Kappas”, but the “Ken” moniker remained in use. After years of declining membership and receiving only one pledge during the 1970 pledge period, the Kappa Epsilon Nu sorority elected to disband at the end of the spring 1970 term.

Abstract
The Kappa Epsilon Nu sorority, known as both the “Kens” and the “Kappas”, was established as a sorority at Augustana College in 1925 by Leota J. Norton, Ester Woodburn, Florence Tams, Eleanor Graham, Ethel Eldrige, Charlotte Schnathoist, Kay Bragg, Helen Searle, Natalie Souders, and Frances Long. The Kens chose to give up their charter in 1970, citing declining membership and insubstantial funds as the cause. The Kappa Epsilon Nu records, 1926-1970 and undated (bulk 1945-1970), includes thirteen scrapbooks documenting the events and activities of the sorority and its members, formal dinner programs, member records, a letter opener, and a KEN pin.
