Scope and Contents
The Ephraim L. and Louise Manning papers, 1905-2010 (bulk 1956-2007), is organized into seven series: Subject files (1970-2004 and undated), Big Hikes (1975-1996 and undated), Photographs (1956-1989 and undated), Holden Village (1988-1990 and undated), Black Hawk Hiking Club (1905-2010 and undated), Realia (1981-1982 and undated), and Audiovisual materials (1956-1992 and undated).
Materials in the collection include newspaper clippings on local history and historic homes, world affairs, local news, and medical news; photographs and slides (many of which document Black Hawk Hiking Club events), scrapbook pages, and audiovisual materials.
The cassette tapes contain recordings of speakers ranging from Augustana College faculty, namely Conrad Bergendoff, to conservative politicians such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Other recordings include the Augustana College Philosophy Club meetings, speakers for the Black Hawk Hiking Club events, and other important figures or leaders in the Quad Cities, such as Jewish rabbis.

Historical Note
Ephraim Manning was born December 31, 1908, in Utica, New York. He married Louise Nascher on September 12, 1937. Manning graduated from City College, received a master’s in bacteriology from New York University, and attended medical school in Zurich, Switzerland. Manning worked as an eye, nose, and throat physician in Davenport, Iowa, from 1949 until 1993. Both Ephraim and Louise were members of the Black Hawk Hiking Club, Friendship Force of the Quad Cities, and Viewfinders Camera Club.
