Scope and Contents

The Richard Collins scrapbook, 1950-1956, contains photographs and clippings collected by Collins depicting student life on campus during his time at Augustana College. Many of the photographs are of his peers in the Pi Upsilon Gamma fraternity, specifically from social events. News clippings discuss his peers' athletic accomplishments in intercollegiate sports such as football, and intramural sports such as tennis, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, and ping-pong. Loose photographs and papers related to Augustana College activities are also included.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Collins was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on 18 September 1934. He graduated from Augustana College in 1956 with a major in English. During his time as a student at Augustana College, Collins participated in a wide variety of activities. He served as president of the writer's club. He also acted as an editor for the Rockety-I yearbook, as well as for Augustana's student literary publication (SAGA), the homecoming booklet, and the freshmen handbook. Along with editing the sports section of The Observer student newspaper, he also contributed as a sports writer. Aside from his literary contributions, he participated in the Augustana College Orchestra and the Augustana College Band, serving as the president, and vice president respectively.

After graduating from Augustana College, Collins went on to become an English educator in the Moline Public School District. He taught English to wide range of pupils, including honors and remedial English.
