Carl Otto Granere was born 27 September 1844 in Småland, Sweden. He graduated from Stockholm in 1870 and traveled to Augustana College in Paxton, Illinois, that same year. From 1872 to 1876 he was a professor of Latin and Swedish and assistant instructor in Church History and Doctrinal Theology at the College.
