Overview The Backman family was active in Galesburg, Ill., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The head of the family was Carl August Backman, who immigrated to the United States in 1868 and began to study at Augustana College in 1875. Backman received a BA in 1881 and graduated from Augustana Theological Seminary in 1883. Overview Emily Caroline Envall was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on 25 November 1869, the oldest child of John and Caroline Peterson Envall, recent immigrants from Sweden. She received less than seven years of formal education in the Galesburg public schools. On 10 January 1889 she entered the Augustana Conservatory of Music at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. Overview The Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist papers, 1840-1988 and undated, primarily documents the personal and professional life of the second president of Augustana College, Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist. Hasselquist was born in Sweden in 1816 and traveled to America in 1852. Before assuming the presidency of the college in 1863, Hasselquist was the president of the Augustana Synod, the editor of a Swedish-language newspaper, and a pastor.
