Abstract Augustana's Prohibition League was one of fifteen college chapters forming the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association. Formed in 1912, eight years before the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution (banning the manufacture, sale, and transfer of alcohol) would go into effect, the Prohibition Leauge was a proponent of the temperance movement, and supported national organizations such as the Anti-Saloon League (1893). Augustana College Social Committee records

Abstract

The Augustana College Social Committee was organized in 1937, replacing the former Board of Control of Social Activities. The group claimed to "ignore organizational frontiers, including all students in its plans." The committee planned numerous all-school social events throughout the school year, including Halloween and Christmas parties as well as a Spring picnic. This collection contains the group's meeting minutes from 1937 to 1948.

Abstract The Backman family was active in Galesburg, Ill., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The head of the family was Carl August Backman, who immigrated to the United States in 1868 and began to study at Augustana College in 1875. Backman received a BA in 1881 and graduated from Augustana Theological Seminary in 1883. Abstract Elizabeth A. Nelson was born in Chesterton, Indiana in 1898. She was valedictorian of her class at Augustana College in 1921 and taught English there for one year until she married Rev. Conrad Bergendoff papers

Abstract Conrad Bergendoff was the fifth president of Augustana College. Bergendoff was born in rural Nebraska in 1895. He attended Augustana College, and was a member of the class of 1915. He also earned a divinity degree from Augustana Seminary. After several years Bergendoff returned to the seminary as the dean, then as the president of the seminary and the college in 1935. The campus and public events collection, 1903-1941 and undated, contains weekly bulletins for campus events and happenings; meeting minutes and official records of Augustana College's Board of Control of Social Activities (later called the Board of Control of Campus Activities), which was charged with overseeing campus programming; and records of the college's Board of Control of Public Meetings, charged with coordinating public events on campus.
