Scope and Contents

The Paul G. Finnman papers, 1937-1982, consists of two folders.

The "Alma Mater" original score and variations folder contains the original score and individual parts of the song, as well as two subsequent arrangements of the piece by Professor Brynolf Lundholm.

The Correspondence from Finnman, 1982, folder contains two letters from Finnman to an unnamed Alumni Director (possibly, Richard A. Swanson) and Professor Ann Boaden, respectively.

Historical Note

Paul G. Finnman was a former student of Augustana College. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Finnman attended Augustana from 1935 until his graduation in 1939. Following a 1936 request in the Augustana Observer, he composed "Alma Mater" for the college in 1937 and received an award for it at the 1940 Homecoming banquet. He also composed several other pieces for fraternities. Finnman often accompanied students in recitals and performances and played organ at college functions. Along with his participation in musical activities, Finnman was a varsity baseball player and a member of the Pi Upsilon Gamma fraternity. After graduating, Finnman was an assistant business manager at the Immanuel Deaconess Institute in Omaha, and later an administrator of McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado.

Abstract

Paul G. Finnman was a former student of Augustana College. Finnman was originally from Nebraska, and graduated as a member of the class of 1939. He composed the words and music for "Alma Mater," a song for Augustana College in 1937, as well as several other pieces for fraternities. Finnman often accompanied students in recitals and performances. His papers include the original score and variations on the piece, as well as two letters from Finnman to the Alumni Director and Professor Ann Boaden, respectively, in 1982.

Received from the Augustana Historical Society and transferred to Special Collections by Betsey Brodahl in January 1983.
