Grant Hanson was born on March 14, 1911, in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, and graduated in 1933. Hanson then married in August 1941, and continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He attended the library school there from 1940 until 1942. The Harper House Hotel was built by Benjamin Harper, a Rock Island businessman. There had been a hotel on the land on which he built the structure since 1846. The five-story brick building cost $100,000 to build and opened on February 21, 1871. Harper included fire escapes in every room – a first for hotels in the Midwest. Tom Robin Harris was born in Nampa, Idaho. He attended Boise Junior College before earning his bachelor’s and master’s of music at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Carter Henry Harrison, Sr. (1825-1893) was an American politician who served four terms as mayor of Chicago, Illinois, from 1879 until 1887. In 1888-1889 he took a trip around the world, an account of which he published in a book entitled A Race with the Sun. This collection consists of a scrapbook containing Harrison's newspaper columns about a portion of the trip.

The Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist papers, 1840-1988 and undated, primarily documents the personal and professional life of the second president of Augustana College, Tufve Nilsson Hasselquist. Hasselquist was born in Sweden in 1816 and traveled to America in 1852. Before assuming the presidency of the college in 1863, Hasselquist was the president of the Augustana Synod, the editor of a Swedish-language newspaper, and a pastor.
